King coached Canada's National Junior Team to a gold medal in 1982 and Canada's Men's Olympic hockey team to a silver medal in 1992 and bronze medal in 2018.
King was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1992 was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1997 and the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2001. In recognition of his contributions to the game with the national teams, Hockey Canada named him to the Order of Hockey in Canada as part of its 2013 class.
